FFA’s acknowledgement of Referee inadequacy, insufficient and inexcusable.

FFA’s acknowledgement of Referee inadequacy

I not sure what it’s going to take to drag soccer kicking and screaming into the 21st century where every other major sport, almost without exception, uses technology to review doubtful decisions but something has to be done. I don’t even blame the referees, it’s difficult at the speed of the modern game to see every incident on all parts of the pitch or sometimes they’re just plain unsighted. Surely they would appreciate it? In the time it takes to protest a decision or the player to run back to the half-way after a goal is “scored” a decision can be reviewed quickly so this isn’t going to hold up the flow of the game unless it’s a difficult one. It would yellow card out the jersey pullers and box-divers almost overnight. Can’t it be trialed in the Australian league? Can sanity prevail? When it comes to the old farts at FIFA I wouldn’t count on it.

Hear hear. A-League referees are part timers, they’re not the best in the world, and that’s not their fault. With time, training and experience they’ll get better. But there needs to be measures put in place by FFA to ensure that in the meantime matches are determined by good players, not bad referees. This means having a post-match review system that doesn’t just shrug and admit that a game was poorly officiated. This means dragging professional football kicking and screaming to embrace the benefits of living in the 21st century with the use of video referrals or goal line technology. This means ensuing players don’t get away with dishonest and/or violent conduct on the field.

Ben Wilson said that “it is important to uphold the notion that the match officials are responsible for making the decisions on a football field and they get the majority of decisions right.” But if they don’t? Because regardless of what notion FFA wants to give, bad refereeing on the level of what has been seen in the A-League is obvious whether you acknowledge it or not.
